No.3
However, DOME is a racing car constructor, and we will be satisfied if the chassis we construct competes in the F1 GP. We were just clinging to the quintessential argument because we were much too concerned with the current situation, rather than we loved the idea of 'ALL JAPAN' and trying to achieve it. Therefore, HONDA's announcement of its participation in fact took a load off my shoulders (although some people might say it is escaping accountability), if I can be honest with you.
Under these circumstances, I think that it is natural that we hoped
to get an opportunity to help HONDA with our limited capability, if
HONDA will really participate with their own chassis as they have
said in the press release. HONDA's move pushed MUGEN into a very delicate
position. But in a way, it might bring flexibility into the race,
and if so, there will be a possibility for us to proceed with a DOME
and MUGEN co-operation project again after they terminate their contract
with JORDAN. Well, I was dreaming my own various optimistic scenarios
like these.
Quite a long time has passed since. Enough, to have these dreams weathered.
The other day, HONDA announced their engine supply to BAR. Also I
heard from somewhere that MUGEN is talking with JORDAN regarding an
extension of their contract to supply engines.
The practical reasons which stopped our 'F1 GP Challenge of NIPPON'
from coming true can be put aside. I now think that the circumstances
of failure were because our principle itself was extreme and out of
reality in Japan to begin with.
Maybe, the scenario we dreamed on which we based our principles was
something of a fairly story. I have been saying over and over from
the very beginning, that I proudly regard our self cultivated racing
car development technology as a young sapling in a desert. In view
of the current situation, I thought that there was enough credibility
for the sapling, and now it would be up to society to allow it to
grow and develop into a large tree. Well, what should I say overestimation?
Over-self-esteem? Misunderstanding? Under-recognition? When I look
back, I now know that it is very simple: people only need big trees
regardless of where they come from.
Of course in principle, it would be good if we could bring the Japanese
racing car development technology up to big tree level. But maybe
you can see from the fact that there is only one proper racing car
constructor - DOME existing in Japan, the existence of DOME itself
in the current motor sport climate is in itself a miracle, if you
allow me to exaggerate the fact. Needless to say, we have no confidence
nor possibility to bring it up to be a big tree by ourselves.
